Update from Europe #2: London

Had a very busy time in London, working with some friends, and then going to the Geek Dinner and Photowalk on Friday night. Saw a bunch of friends there, including Robert and Maryam Scoble, Ian Forrester, and Hugh MacLeod - and got to know Mark Earls, who wrote the teriffic book Herd.

Here's some of my favorite pictures from the Photowalk we did on the south bank of the Thames in London.

European trip update, with photos (Amsterdam Version)

It's been a busy week! I had a great time speaking at NokiaWorld in Amsterdam, you can see my presentation on Blogs, Social Networks, and the Mobile world, I had some great conversations with Nokia folks and developers afterwards. Afterwards, I hooked up with Gabe Macintyre and Anina, and did a photowalk around Amsterdam. Some of my favorite pictures are below:

Upcoming travel: Amsterdam, London, Paris in December

I'm doing a second european trip next week, and looking forward to it!

Here's the details:

December 3-5: Amsterdam for NokiaWorld. I'm speaking on the topic of "New Social Media and Networks" at 15:30 on Dec 4th. I'm sure that I'll be hanging around the show somewhat as well as looking to enjoy Amsterdam - if you're a local (or a visitor!) and want to meet up, drop me a line.

December 6-9: London. I'm doing some work for a client in London, and staying the weekend. I hear that there's a geek dinner already being set up on the evening of December 7th, sounds cool, I'll be there. Looking for fun things to do and people to hang out with over the weekend. If you're in London, let me know.

December 10-12: Paris for Le Web. I'm helping Loic, Geraldine, Cathy, and the team out as a judge in the Startup Competition. Definitely looking forward to spending some time in Paris, and of course, looking to meet up with locals - perhaps for a photowalk on the 12th?

The Photowalk will be publicized!

Just heard from the folks at Map Magazine, "Your Daily Dose of Madrid", and looks like we'll have lots of company for the Photowalk. The details are all worked out, here they are so you can let your Madrid friends know:

11/17 (This Saturday): Photowalking around Madrid. Alejandro Fuhrmann is doing a wonderful job getting things organized, the schedule is below:

10:30: Meet at "SOL" in downtown Madrid next to the "Oso y el Madroño" statue. From there, we'll have a nice walk of the area. For those of you who can't make it in the morning or have things to do, we're going to have two stops as well:

14:00: lunch at Bazaar (C/ Libertad 21, 28004 Madrid)

18:30: drinks at Juana la loca (Plaza Puerta de Moros 4, La Latina)

And if you're free this evening and want to come to my talk at the IEEE Society at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, I posted all the details.

More details on my Madrid talks and walks

Madrid is beautiful, and the weather is great, and a group of folks have gotten things really nicely set up for my visit. Here's an update on what's going on for the rest of the week:

11/15 (This Thursday evening): I'm speaking at UPM IEEE Student Branch at 17:00pm, and we're going to go out afterwards for a Geek Dinner after the talk. Here's the location of the talk, you don't have to be a student to attend, just drop an email to info@ieeedb.es with your name, and job so that they can plan accordingly.

The details are the following:

Where: "Aula Magna" room in the Building A of Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros de Telecomunicación of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
Street: Avenida Complutense s/n 28040 Madrid Spain
Subway: Ciudad Universitaria or Metropolitano stations
Buses: U, G, F, 82, 132

After the talk, we're having a Geek dinner! Here's the details:

Restaurant: Jardín
Location: Calle Calderón de la Barca 8, Madrid 28013

It has spanish food (but not the typical "jamón serrano" or cheese). It's right on the center of Madrid (100 metros from the Royal Palace, the Real Theatre). It's not noisy, and I've talked with them so we will be comfortable. We've been thinking on having some first dishes to share, and then a second dish each one. There's currently only room for about 15 people, so please send Javier (he's been organizing this) an email to info@ieeedb.es, which would be courteous. But if it's last minute, just come on down anyway, I'm sure we can make room.

Invite your friends, I'm really looking forward to getting to know the "real" Madrid, and all of you great folks who live there! My local Spanish number is +34 677940677 if you need to reach me at the walk (or if you get lost). Just note that I don't speak much Spanish! ;-)

San Francisco Photowalk Pictures

I just got back from the San Francisco Photowalk, and it was, as usual, a great time. Thanks to Thomas Hawk and friends for setting it up!

Because of daylight savings time, by the time we started, it was already getting dark, but I thought ahead and brought my tripod. There were about 30 people there tonight, and it was a fun and lively crew. Here's some of my favorites from the evening, you can see the entire set here:

Madrid here I come!

A heads-up to all my european friends - I'm coming to Madrid November 11th to the 21st. I'm going to be doing some work while there, so this isn't a simple vacation, but I expect that there will be a reasonable amount of free time during my stay. If you want to meet up (I'd really love to do a Madrid Photowalk sometime, anyone up for it?) drop me an email or leave a comment here.

2007 Bernal Heights Soap Box Derby

Classic racer - 4697.jpgToday was the last Sunday in October, and that meant that it was time for the annual Illegal Soap Box Derby on Bernal Heights Hill in San Francisco. I brought the family, and it was fantastic. There was a very relaxed atmosphere, and yet many people had brought some pretty sophisticated soap box racers. I bumped into Scott Beale as we were leaving, and he gave me more background of the Derby - appraently, there's no permit, no cops, and thus no safety patrol - and I gotta tell you, that just added to the charm of the event - truly a real San Francisco event that just felt really natural and friendly. It was my first trip all the way to the top of Bernal Heights hill, and even though it doesn't look like much on Google Earth, it really gave a spectacular view of downtown San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, and locations to the four points on the compass - all the way to Twin Peaks to the east, Daly City to the south, the Bay Bridge and Oakland piers to the east, and of course, the downtown financial district to the north. Quite beautiful. Many thanks to Telstar Logistics for getting this organized.

Dogfight before turn 4 - 4684.jpgOne of the great things about a soap box derby is the sounds you hear - No loud engines, no robots chopping heads off, just a bunch of adults, kids, and dogs hanging out in the beautiful afternoon enjoying some death-defying feats powered only by gravity. Occasionally, a motorcycle was overheard pulling a raer back up the course, sort of a victory lap for the intrepid few who dared to risk the course.

The entire set of my pictures are up on flickr, here's a smattering of my favoritest:
